8 Facts about Taak

Tagged by It’s clear you’ve put much more thought into your character’s backstories than I do, but I still enjoy these memes.

In case it isn’t obvious, I’m not great at detailed world-building. I haven’t named the country Taak lives in yet, but it does have a little historical background.

Time is divided into BK (Before King years) and AK (After King years). This represents the founding of the country from several small regions which were conquered by a warlord, who appointed himself the first king. The country is currently experiencing a golden age, and hasn’t been involved in war for over 100 years.

Mountark is the largest city in the northern region where the climate is still temperate. It is historically associated with farming and population growth has only just begun to accelerate. Ghoul migration into the area is so recent that there are still living offspring of the first ghouls to set foot in the city.

Taak is based on a cat I helped take care of We never diagnosed the cause of his nerve damage, but he adapted quite well.

He can move his legs a little and has some sensation, especially pressure and intense pain. Since magical treatments for extreme injuries are experimental and expensive, he has accepted the idea that he’ll never be able to walk like a normal person.

Sometimes his back gets sore from sitting in the wheelchair all day. When it frustrates him he gets out and drags himself wherever he needs to go. Ellie has explained how healthy it would be for him to start using a cart again, but he refuses. He worries that no one could take him seriously if he walks using his hands like a dog.

At around 10 years old and physically mature he starts wearing gloves when he is around anyone besides his family. He keeps his claws trimmed as short as possible and uses the gloves to hide their shape. He also likes using elegant hats to hide his inhumanly large ears.

Taak loves reading. His favorite author is John Smidley, an adventurer who published his journals. After his family Smidley was one of the greatest influences on Taak’s developing worldview, which was not always a good thing. Smidley was kind and well-meaning, but believed that non-human species had underdeveloped intellect.

Taak can smell emotions. Different kinds of excitement alter a person’s scent in different ways. He can tell if someone is frightened, nervous, or attracted to someone else. He can also tell that someone is lying if they aren’t in a very calm state of mind about it. He enjoys having this ability, as well as being able to tell what people have been up to based on what scents they carry with them.

His adoptive aunt and uncle once offered to convince one of their daughters to be his mate if he had difficulty finding one. He managed to hide how much that freaked him out and just say, “No thank you.”
