RABBIT

■ ANIMAL SPIRIT ■ TROUBLEMAKER

...Short and Sweet
Rabbit has a scrawny build and a juvenile sense of humor. He can be lazy and cruel, which causes other animal spirits and humans to lose respect for him. An aspiring trickster, he is jealous of Coyote's infamy and believes he can do him one better. Unlike Coyote, he doesn't know where to draw the line between "just kidding" and "dude, not funny."

NANABOZHO

■ HUMAN ■ HUNTER/WARRIOR

...Short and Sweet
Nanabozho is a young Ojibwa hunter living in ancient times who has aspirations of becoming a mighty warrior. He is highly motivated by visions of fame, but also has a big heart overflowing with desire to help the needy. He assumes achieving this goal will be easy, due to the rare connection he shares with the summer manitou Missahba, who can grant him supernatural abilities. Tribemates are both jealous and suspicious of his friendship with the spirit, since manitous are notorious for their indifference to humans and usually only listen to the most powerful medicine men. Despite everything Nanabozho has going for him, his greatest enemy is himself. How do you fight when your natural reaction to danger is to panic and run away?

I am kind of nervous about this one, but I feel I’m ready to give it a try. Aside from Coyote I’ve never used a character that “belongs” to another people, and as a culture hero I want to do Nanabozho justice. I had to rework some things about his origin to fit the rules in my story, but hopefully he will be recognizable while I try to “make him my own” for a little while. =p

THE CREATIVE SPIRIT

■ SPIRIT BEING ■ DEITY

...Short and Sweet
The creator does not know if he created himself, or was made by an even more powerful being. He used his imagination to fill the Earth with life, seeking increasingly more intelligent beings to keep him company. He can travel as an invisible presence, or appear in any form he chooses. His default "physical" form resembles a tall, intimidating man. An immature being with more power than experience, he grew frustrated with his creations when they would not stop disappointing him. He left the animal spirits to look after the world with the promise to return someday to see if they had matured, but in his heart he knows he was really looking for an excuse to get away before his temper broke and he destroyed his beloved children.

The Creative Spirit is the closest thing the story has to a “god.” I actually don’t like him very much but it is an interesting idea to work with, the thought of a creator’s personal flaws preventing the world from reaching some kind of paradise he is trying to make from his imagination. Add a lack of role models and you get a very confused being.

LILY | GREENBUSH / WENDIGO SPIRIT

■ CURSED HUMAN ■ BARTENDER

...Short and Sweet
Lily is an Ojibwa woman raised in an urban environment while maintaining an interest in her heritage and the Canadian wilderness. She is short and has dark skin and long black hair. A likely candidate for diagnosis with antisocial personality disorder, she visited rival bars and experimented with different ways of luring away and murdering drunk patrons. Lusting for a more visceral way of enjoying her hobby, she intentionally invoked the wendigo curse, not understanding that a spirit would be taking control of her body. This wendigo spirit is aggressive, and has a centuries-old feud with Prankster due to his obnoxious behavior. It has never inhabited a female host, leading to confusing feelings of attraction to spirits with male hosts that it suppresses with additional doses of aggressive behavior.

:bulletblack:

Lily is one of my favorite minor characters, and represents the greed for power present in some wendigo myths. The spirit that possesses her isn’t nearly as entertaining as Prankster, so it mostly serves to provide the contrasting “traditional” viewpoint of his race.
