My first Akita by Leonca My first Akita by Leonca
Female American Akita (dog behind her is a Great Pyrenees)

The Akita has been my favorite dog breed ever since sometime in high school, but up until now Iíve never had a chance to meet one. These people kindly let me photograph their dogs when I met them on a walk to document the snowpocalypse. She didnít pay me much attention except for sniffing and licking drool on my gloves, but that alone was a good reminder that these are not all vicious monsters despite their bad reputation. She may be overweight, but sheís one of the most beautiful things Iíve ever seen. =D

Color: red tipped sable and white (Irish) with black mask

Isn't she quite fat for an akita? ^^

Wow, such gorgeous colors! I seem to be brain farting on my Akita terminology, though, this is sable and white?
I want to give it a big fluffy hug <3

After doing some research I believe you are correct and the color is red sable with a black mask, probably with Irish white spotting.

Thanks. =) I’m not sure if it’s sable or dark fawn.

Wha- they have a bad reputation?'
I'd be more afraid of a pitbull than something so cute and fluffy :D (I know pitbulls aren't vicious except when mistreated and stuff, but their lack of fur reminds me of thuggish characters that share the same baldness)

Many people get them and don’t socialize them well, so they go after people and other dogs.

But isn't that the same case with lots of big dogs? Eg. Pitbulls, German Shepards, Rottweilers...

True. I myself have had more bad encounters with German Shepherd Dogs than any other breed. The Akita is very independent though, so it requires a good trainer to make it behave well. They also have a history of being bred for dog fighting, so even if they are nice with people they may have natural dog aggression issues.

The natural dog aggression thing is tricky, especially if they're the only dog in the house, but ultimately it's up to the owner to either train them, or to simply take the easy route and select a breed that's amicable (retrievers can't go wrong in personality, but have some serious genetic issues though)
