Hungry He awoke to the scent of smoke. Saliva beaded at the corners of his mouth. His head rose from the branch and dislodged a blanket of snow. A thin black line rose above the treetops into the pale winter sky. After a quick stretch he leaped from his perch, landed on his feet, and broke into an effortless trot. He followed the smoke by scent until he reached a familiar clearing and discovered a campsite. A boy and a girl sat beside a fire.

He hunched his back and hugged himself before approaching them, as if bracing against the cold. He stumbled into the clearing. Both pairs of eyes turned in unison. The girl lowered hers with a blush. The boy
Uninvited Guest, part I Wendigo came across the first evidence of one of his own kind he had seen for a long time while following a path in the woods. It wasn't much of a path, just a pair of grooves left in the snow by some kind of machine, but as an unmistakable sign of recent human activity he was not surprised to find the Other's tracks. The scent told him the Other possessed a male human's body, but it was unfamiliar. He would not be able to tell who the Other was without a closer connection.

He followed the tracks until they intersected with a second pair. They were large and belonged to a human who must have been enjoying a day of snowshoeing. The outing w
Parasite Raymond stared at the remains of the rabbit trap with slumped shoulders. Tufts of fur and spots of blood on the snow taunted him. His efforts had merely provided a wolverine with an easy meal. He sighed, turned his back on the sight, and collected an armful of firewood.

He had to stop to rest several times on his way back to the cave where his companions waited. Each time he pondered how to best break the news that they had to go to bed on empty stomachs once again. Jacques' strength was fading faster than his own, and Pierre had little hope of recovering from his fever if he did not have a meal soon. Raymond could not help but feel he wou

Since this series has gone over well with my small fanbase, I figure this can be kind of a late Christmas gift. =p

Great prompt for exploring one of Wendigo’s weird neuroses. Since his true form is non-corporeal, the physical sensations a human body feels can be distracting. In his hypersensitive state water feels unpleasant, kind of like how autistic people such as myself sometimes can’t stand to wear clothing that is too tight or has a strange texture to it.

Not sure what summer weather is like in Canada, but as a winter spirit Wendigo’s definition of “warm” is going to be different than our own. =p He would sleep half the year away if the hunger let him.

This ended on a sadder note than I expected. :XD: Very interesting trying to define the emotional state of a non-human being. Much of Wendigo’s behavior is impulsive and ruled by instinct, but he is also intelligent enough to realize that things could be different. He doesn’t feel bad about killing humans, but is driven by loneliness and boredom to want them for company as well as food. =(

Mature filter for anyone who is icked out by stuff involving eyes or general bloody shenanigans. :XD:

*Edits 12/27/11- Typo catches. Wendigo is now a he again. =p

It was a very gruesome yet enticing read. I've always thought the idea of the monster has been overdone, but this was still an interesting read. You also build tension well.
